Top 10 Best Sci-Fi Games You Can Play For Free in 2020

Recently, we’ve been publishing a lot of content helping non-programmers learn how to make sci-fi video games without having to know how to code. However, we thought we’d take a short break from our game development tutorials and instead focus a couple of posts on game playing instead.

In yesterday’s post we covered the top 10 free space games. Today’s post is a follow up to that post, but instead of covering space games, we’ve decided to cover the top 10 sci-fi games that you can play for free online.

1. Planet Calypso

Planet Calypso is one of my favorite games on this list. To say it’s an addictive game is an understatement. It’s a free to play game that takes place in the Entropia universe. The universe is massive and consists of multiple planets that you can travel too if you earn enough money to purchase a spaceship. In some ways the game reminds me of Star Citizen because the world is massive and totally open to explore. Similarly, the gameplay and game narrative is determined by the collective decisions of the players. What sets Planet Calypso apart, is that its in-game currency is actually pegged to real world currencies. This means that you can actually earn (or lose) real money by playing Planet Calypso. For example, a virtual resort was built and sold for over $600,000 and then flipped at a profit.

2. Destiny 2

Destiny 2 is a first person shooter (FPS) with action packed gameplay and an engaging narrative. Destiny 2 has some of the most beautiful cut scenes with great performances which help to push the already captivating narrative along. In today, you’ll go through about 40 hours of gameplay through 4 different game worlds and countless sub-quests before you reach the final Leviathan raid where you’ll require great levels of skill and a well planned out strategy to emerge as the victor.

3. Warframe

Warframe is a free to play co-op shooter where you choose to be one of many different heroes navigating the many quests through the game. You can be a ninja, samurai, greek god, goddess or even a space pirate engineer. If you like games that seem to offer an endless ball of surprises then Warframe could be the game for you. The gameplay is chaotic and challenging and as a new player, it can be difficult to get your bearings in both the gameplay and lore. But if you can manage to break through the learning barrier, Warframe can be an incredibly entertaining game to play.

4. Spacelords

Spacelords is a beautiful tactical sci-fi fantasy game with engaging lore and intense action that helps to push the game’s narrative along. You will begin by selecting one of the game’s many built-in characters and then you’ll work towards unlocking new characters and upgrading characters you ultimately want to make an investment in developing.

5. Defiance 2050

Defiance 2050 is a free to play 3rd person sci-fi looter / shooter game. As you play through levels, you’ll unlock new abilities and weapons. When you begin playing you’ll need to pick a class (assassin, guardian, combat medic etc), and then progress through each game map with the special abilities of that class. It’s a simple game, with less lore and complexity than some of the other games on this list, but it’s a game with great mechanics and lively gameplay.

6. UFO Online Invasion

UFO Online Invasion is a post-apocalyptic turn based free to play MMORPG game. This game takes place in the not too distant future when earth becomes overrun with aliens. This game has great game mechanics and a beautiful atmosphere. It allows for a great amount of customization as far as weapon customization goes which allows for some really interesting gameplay.

7. MechWarrior Online

MechWarrior is a tactical sci-fi shooter where you are responsible for piloting a fully customizable BattleMech (over 50 of them) and expanding your mech empire. So yes, this game is more than just a shooter game. You actually have a business to run, which in my opinion makes the game a lot more immersive because it requires a great deal of strategy beyond the moment to moment battles.

8. Planetside 2

Planetside 2 is one of the best online first person shooter games you have listed on this roundup list. It’s an engaging game with enormous open game worlds where you can engage in person to person ground combat, control tanks, ground vehicles and even assault aircraft. However, your success will be dependent on your group’s coordination and strategy. Each player within each group will have a class (assault, engineer, sniper etc) and therefore each player will have a primary role to play. However, it’s the squads combined effort which ultimately leads to victory in Planetside 2.

9 . StarCraft II

StarCraft 2 is a real time sci-fi strategy game with both single player and multiplayer capabilities. You begin by joining one of three factions and then set out to start gathering resources to build your army and empire. StarCraft 2 is a lot like it’s predecessor, but that’s not a complaint. The StarCraft series is a must-play game series for those that are interested in sci-fi strategy games.

10. Star Trek Online

With Star Trek Online you take the captain’s chair and immerse yourself in the Star Trek Universe. You’ll be required to customize both your character and ship as you work through the game’s various sub-quests. One of the features I like most about this free to play Star Trek game is that gameplay is split between on-the-ground combat and space combat which helps keep gameplay fresh.
