Looking for FREE Space Games to Play in 2020?

In today’s post we’re going to explain what we believe at Sovereign Moon Studios to be the best 10 space games that you can play for free online today. Recently, we’ve been publishing a lot of content about how to make space related games without having to know how to code. However, we thought we’d switch things up a little by focusing on playing games, rather than making them.

So if you need to take a break from our game development course in order to look for inspiration, here is a list of 10 space games you can play for free online right now.

1. EVE Online

Eve Online is a breathtakingly beautiful space game with depth that many people find hard to escape. EVE online is a huge MMO with what feels like an almost infinite universe to explore. People from all around the world login and join groups that compete against each other for authority. However, if you’re just logging in for the first time, you won’t need to concern yourself with the user-defined story that’s unfolding. Instead, your missions focus around training to better understand the game mechanics. If you’re looking for a simple game you can learn in 30 minutes, EVE online is not the right choice. Eve gives you granular control over pretty much every part of the game and with this level of detail comes a steeper learning curve than most other games on the list have. That said, the time you invest in learning to play EVE online will be well worth it, because once you understand the fundamentals, you’ll have access to one of the most immersive game worlds that exists online today.

2. Star Conflict

Star Conflict is a free to play space game where you join others in various online missions. The game allows you to jump in and enjoy short gameplay experience, or you can deepen your immersion in the game by joining groups and building up your space empire.

Star Conflict is a beautifully designed space game that has over 200 available spacecraft to unlock.

3. Planet Calypso

This is one of my personal favorite space related games. Planet Calypso is a science fiction game that we put on our list of the best sci-fi games you can play for free, but we included in on this space list as well, because space exploration and travel make up a big part of their open game world. Essentially, you can purchase spaceships within the game economy and then navigate between different planets within the huge open game world. One of the features of Planet Calypso that make it so interesting, is that it’s game economy is actually connected to our real world economy. This means, that if you earn money in the game world, you can cash out in the real world.

4. Star Trek Online

Star Trek Online is a free to play online space game that offers both ground and space combat scenarios. Similarly, like many of the other games on this list (like Planet Calypso), Star Trek Online has a strong social element to it and the game takes shape based on your preferences and game play decisions. This large open world allows you to select which faction you want to become part of and then you can start working on building up and customizing your own starship and character.

5. Endless Sky

Endless Sky is a space game that anyone can download and play for free. From a graphics standpoint, Endless Sky is the most simplistic game we’ve included in our list. The game has simple 2D graphics and most of the storytelling is told through the use of simple photos with accompanying text. At times the game feels a little bit more like reading a comic book or playing an old school RPG. However, these are the features that make Endless Sky Unique. The writing is great and the storylines keep you involved from the start. As you jump back and forth between different planetary systems you’ll encounter both friends you’ll need to support and enemies who want you dead.

6. Dark Orbit

Released in 2006, this browser based space MMO has over 300 million registered accounts. Dark Orbit has more simple mechanics than many of the other games mentioned on the list. The focus of the game is to kill both alien ships and enemy company spacecraft in order to upgrade your own ranking within your faction (called “companies” within Dark Orbit).

7. Vendetta Online

With Vendetta Online most of the game occurs in space. Some of the other games on this list have both space combat and ground combat, but with Vendetta online, you can expect most of your game play to take place in space. From time to time you’ll need to dock with space stations in order to upgrade your ship and buy and sell supplies, but for the most part you’ll experience the game through a first first person perspective. This default view provides some really fun gameplay. Vendetta online requires a lot of skill and quick reflexes if you plan on staying alive within this game world.

The game world is huge and you can pretty much do whatever you want. There are 13 factions and over 70 ships that you can customize to your liking. So if you’re looking for a big open world space game like EVE Online (but with a lot less complexity), then Vendetta Online would be a great game to check out.

8. Astro Empires

Astro Empires is a browser based MMOG that’s less about fancy graphics and more about strategy. As a game player, you’ll be required to build up your space empire which will consist of things like bases, fleets, commanders and allies. Your bases will have their own productive economies that you’ll require to help fund the expansion of your empire. You own bases, and those bases have their own productive economies. Like many of the other games within this list, Astro Empires is an open world that progresses based on the actions of the world’s players.

9. Vega Conflict

Vega Conflict is a space game that, like others on this list, uses a freemium approach to game monetization. In the past, it was quite an open game but then the game developers decided to make their free version very restricted. Many game players pushed back against the decision and since then the developers have made the free version of the game more playable by giving free players access to more advanced game components (like the ability to build capital ships). The game is beautiful and boasts 80 playable spaceships. Your goal is to build up your fleet so that you’ll be able to attack player controlled enemy fleets and bases.

10. Spacelords

Spacelords is an action based shooter with an emphasis on combat. You’ll become part of one of the game’s four factions (alien, wardog, hade’s, fifth council) and then you’ll be thrown into a map where you’ll be responsible for completing a mission objective. Many of the other games we covered in this list focused more heavily on strategy and space combat. We wanted to round out the list a little bit by including a game with a heavier focus on ground combat and that’s why Spacelords made the list!
